id=\"what-is-sap-master-data\"><\/span>What is SAP master data?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p data-beyondwords-marker=\"08c975fd-20a1-4b0e-b2d7-a10ce6c95f50\"><strong>Master data <\/strong>is operationally relevant data that rarely if ever changes.\u202fThis includes, for example, information about materials and articles, business partners such as vendors and debtors, and employees.\u202fSAP master data is recorded in the SAP system and is available to all applications and the respective authorised SAP users.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p data-beyondwords-marker=\"5bf7a578-56c1-462b-9ebf-f056a3786a4d\">In master data, a distinction is made between\u202f<strong>primary<\/strong>\u202fand\u202f<strong>secondary<\/strong> master data.\u202fThe already mentioned data records materials, articles, business partners and employees are part of the primary master data.\u202fIt is characteristic here that this information can stand alone.\u202fThe secondary master data, on the other hand, usually only makes sense in connection with other data records (e.g., primary master data).\u202fSecondary master data is information such as prices, conditions, customs tariff numbers and parts lists.\u202fPrices, for example, are hardly meaningful on their own.\u202fHowever, if these are related to the primary master data such as material or article, the SAP system can work with them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p data-beyondwords-marker=\"a588292b-9cd0-4c8f-94b8-fefeccbdee10\">The exact opposite of the master data is the transaction data.\u202fThey change regularly and are only temporarily related to the data-beyondwords-marker=\"e44511ef-658a-4008-8016-ff08972558b6\">Master data is essential for the operation and use of the SAP system.\u202fThey are required to control operational\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.d-velop.com\/topics\/business-processes\">business processes<\/a>, are a prerequisite for data evaluation and serve as the basis for company decisions.\u202fAchieving and maintaining a high quality of SAP master data is not easy but offers enormous advantages.\u202fThey enable transparent and efficient business processes and reduce the working time for corresponding processes by 5% on average.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p data-beyondwords-marker=\"33691933-35ea-4a81-941b-222836b70f34\">Disadvantages of low master data quality, on the other hand, are significant problems along the value chain, which are often associated with high costs.\u202fA scientific study by the RWTH Aachen has shown that poor master data quality in the manufacturing industry leads to more queries, longer throughput times, additional costs in operational processes and poor process quality.\u202fThese occur most in production planning, sales and order processing, materials management or warehouse management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 data-beyondwords-marker=\"8607484b-6cb8-4cd9-8d9b-b430dc50e620\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Let&#8217;s look at some examples of this<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 data-beyondwords-marker=\"af29554c-5db7-41f6-8c3d-e4ed7fd5f4df\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Incorrect customer master data<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p data-beyondwords-marker=\"2417c591-339d-4508-9ee4-6ea033f38bcc\">Many companies only send their SAP outgoing invoices to their customers by e-mail.\u202fIf incorrect or outdated e-mail addresses are stored in the SAP customer master data, the invoice will not reach the customer.\u202fThis leads to increased coordination effort, in which many different people are involved, time and money are lost and in the worst case, the relationship with the customer suffers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 data-beyondwords-marker=\"8673ce8d-a7e0-4638-8e31-04cf467b1f3d\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Incorrect information in article master data<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p data-beyondwords-marker=\"13c08188-3063-4692-90f4-7ead900c0652\">If picking slips are created in logistics, based on incorrect weights or dimensions from the SAP article master data, the goods issue is delayed.\u202fDeliveries that have been put together incorrectly have to be processed several times and costs can arise due to increased waiting times for the forwarding agents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 data-beyondwords-marker=\"40f6dddf-fb88-4d83-b744-e1892f4bc0fb\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Incomplete raw material master data<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p data-beyondwords-marker=\"b8d3f9a7-0345-433f-9d3b-e5e47c8a0324\">If raw materials are created incompletely in the SAP system, this leads to errors in the corresponding production orders.\u202fIf, for example, necessary properties such as kosher or halal are not stored for food, the production orders cannot be carried out until it is clarified whether these certifications actually do not exist or have simply not been maintained in the SAP system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 data-beyondwords-marker=\"97c0cf2c-b3d8-42ad-a008-312754e33d77\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Inaccurate database for evaluations<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p data-beyondwords-marker=\"176691d9-4707-4d09-a4b5-9aa24d9a2fda\">SAP master data form the basis for company-wide analyses and data evaluations.\u202fThese evaluations are often used for strategic company decisions.\u202fAn inaccurate or faulty database thus leads to wrong strategic decisions, which can have far more serious consequences than loss of time and money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p data-beyondwords-marker=\"5401d1cd-8859-483b-b60c-c869b0ccf99c\">These are certainly just a few examples of the many problems and negative consequences of poor SAP master data quality.\u202fThey clearly show that high and sustainable master data quality, is an essential business factor for corporate success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 data-beyondwords-marker=\"9c1f0b1a-efdf-48d7-b886-477be298042c\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"the-importance-of-sap-master-data-for-digitisation\"><\/span>The importance of SAP master data for digitisation<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p data-beyondwords-marker=\"1e03ea57-76a5-44a3-9a0b-657cf38a2728\">According to the L\u00fcnendonk\u00ae study from 2016, good master data quality is fundamental to digitisation in a company.\u202fSpecifically, it describes that digital business models are only possible if companies have their master data under control.
